Laphroaig Scotch Whisky and Cigar Tasting

Join Blowin’ Smoke and the Laphroaig Ambassador on Thursday, May 17th for a Laphroaig and Cigar Tasting from 6:30pm to 8:30pm

It has been called the “the most medicinal of scotches”, and it is well known as Prince Charles’s favorite single malt (but we will not hold that against the whisky). It is one of the most distinctive tasting scotches on the planet, and on Thursday, May 17th we will be hosting a tasting of four different Laphroaig whiskies – Laphroaig 10 Year Old, Laphroaig 18 Year Old, Laphroaig Quarter Cask, and the new Laphroaig Triple Wood. The Laphroaig Ambassador will be in the shop to answer all of your questions about Laphroaig and will assist us in pairing the scotch with some of your favorite cigars. The scotch tasting is FREE, so do not miss out!

Bedford Police Honor Guard Event

Blowin’ Smoke hosted a Spring Smoker event to help raise funds for the Bedford Honor Guard. The proceeds for the event went towards helping the police department purchase the proper uniforms to be worn at the funerals of fallen officers. The event featured Ashton cigars, catered food from Carrabba’s Italian Grill and a Sam Adams tasting. The event went off without a hitch and thank you all so much for attending. We were able to write a check for $1,720 and I can assure you the department was extremely grateful. Thank you all again for your continued support!

Bourbon & Cigar Tasting Event

Join us on Thursday, February 16th at 6:30pm for a bourbon and cigar tasting event. A representative for Knob Creek and Maker’s Mark will be in the shop to answer your questions about the bourbons, and we will be choosing cigars that we feel pair well with the bourbon. For $25 you will receive two excellent cigars, four samples of premium bourbon, and a raffle ticket for prizes. We look forward to seeing you!

Whisky Notes: Maker’s 46 Bourbon

“Anyway. Back in Loretto, these SWA (Scotch Whisky Association) big guns should meet their OK Corral, because they will come face-to-face with something that will gun them down. It isn’t a Colt .45, it’s a Maker’s 46. That is the new whisky (and yes, whisky, not whiskey) that has just turned the quality of an already excellent bourbon up a notch…or three.”*

– Jim Murray (author of The Whisky Bible)

Whoa. In reading between the lines, what does one glean from that paragraph?

Here is a man that certainly knows his whisky (and whiskey). He is an expert in his field. He clearly has an issue with some of the folks at the Scotch Whisky Association about something.

In brief, Jim is raging against convention. Against conventional ‘What’? – the SWA’s objection to Kevin Smith’s (Director of Bourbon and Distillery Operations for Jim Beam) use of charred French Oak virgin staves (stakes of wood) placed in a barrel for the final aging of the spirit. Traditionally, the spirit is aged in an “un-staved” barrel – i.e., an empty barrel. Jim does not object to the staving, and he has our attention.

What is Maker’s 46, and why is it special? How might this relate to our favorite pastime of smoking the finest tobacco (in the form of cigars) that the world has to offer?

In sticking with the spirit (no pun intended) of Jim’s comments, let us make the following observations:

  • Convention is losing its place in this world. Convention is something that isbecoming rather than something that is here to stay.
  • There is no place for complacency. To create something special, one needs to “draw outside the lines.”
  • When making judgment, the standard is not that which currently exists but that which could be.

This last point is important, perhaps the most important of all.

Oh, you want tasting notes for Maker’s 46? Well, to be conventional, you will probably taste the following:

  • Heavy cinnamon on the nose
  • Nutmeg underneath
  • Carrot cake on the palate
  • Enough alcohol to get your attention (47% by volume, 94 proof)

To be unconventional, you will have to find out for yourself what it tastes like…

As far as cigars go, let’s just say that you can find out more about unconventional by e-mailing

Cigar Notes: The Rocky Patel Decade Torpedo

The Rocky Patel Decade features a dark Sumatra wrapper and a rich blend of Nicaragua binder and filler that was ten years in the making. It’s a rich smoke offering a woody/oak flavor that pleases the complex palate. The Sumatra wrapper tends to oily vs dry. Construction is excellent, with a smooth draw and consistent burn. It is beautifully made. You’ll enjoy this cigar for approx. one hour of smoking pleasure. The Decade Torpedo scored a lofty 95 rating in Cigar Aficionado, making it a surefire winner. We agree.
